Considered two of the best cosmetic dentists in Washington, DC, Dr. Deb and Dr. Rob can restore the appearance of chipped and broken teeth with cosmetic bonding. After treating the tooth surfaces, the dentist will apply a resin and tint, sculpt, and polish it to blend with your natural smile. A high-intensity light will harden the resin. Bonding can eliminate stains, gaps, and even crooked or malformed teeth.

Natural Looking Restorations

For over a century, dentists primarily restored teeth with amalgam, a material made from metals that included mercury. We’ve had to live with amalgam’s weaknesses, which include temperature sensitivity, inadequate decay protection, and tooth discoloration as the material corrodes. Amalgams have also been known to crack teeth, since the metal expands when it comes into contact with hot or cold. Furthermore, mercury is a hazardous heavy metal known to cause problems in humans and animals.

Modern materials allow us to provide strong, natural-looking tooth restorations without amalgam. At Bethesda Sedation Dentistry, we use tooth-colored composite resin adhesives to bond teeth. We can provide a bright, healthy, and long-lasting smile with these exciting new techniques and materials in adhesion dentistry.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

In the past, dentists used amalgam fillings to fill the cavity where tooth decay was removed. Amalgams contain mercury, a substance we now know to be harmful to the body. Metal is a poor substance for fillings, so we use more durable and attractive composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings.

Over time, amalgam corrodes and leaks, blackening the filling and the tooth. Patients with old, metal fillings are often embarrassed to smile or open their mouths fully and show their blackened teeth. At Bethesda Sedation Dentistry, our dentists place tooth-colored fillings made of a porcelain-like material that actually bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. Tooth-colored fillings are strong, stain-resistant, and color-matched to the natural tooth enamel, making them totally inconspicuous.
