Bethesda Cosmetic Dentists Explain What to Expect for Different Sedation Techniques
Dr. Robert Schlossberg and Dr. Deborah Klotz highlight three sedation dentistry methods that can help patients remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the entirety of their treatment.
Bethesda, MD — Sedation dentistry can often be an excellent option to help individuals cope with various reasons they may not be receiving the proper dental care they need, states Dr. Robert Schlossberg, a cosmetic dentist in Bethesda. Some of the most common of these reasons include anxieties or phobias about dental visits, a poor response to dental anesthesia, an inability to sit still or remain comfortable in the dental chair, a lack of time available in one’s schedule to undergo an extensive treatment or procedure, and a number of other concerns.
At Bethesda Sedation Dentistry, Dr. Schlossberg and his colleague, Dr. Deborah Klotz, offer three different types of sedation, each of which can help patients remain relaxed and comfortable throughout the entirety of their appointment. These sedation methods include:
- Nitrous Oxide
- Oral Conscious Sedation
- IV Sedation
Also called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a popular, fast-acting sedation technique that is absorbed by the body as patients breathe through a small piece placed over the nose, explains Dr. Klotz. During treatment, she continues, the level of nitrous oxide is closely monitored and can be adjusted at any time based on the unique circumstance. Once the dental service or procedure is complete, she notes that the gas quickly leaves the individual’s system, and most patients are able to drive themselves home immediately after their appointment.
For oral conscious sedation, Dr. Schlossberg states that patients are given oral medication to swallow once seated comfortably in the dental chair, often covered by a warm, thick blanket. Though they are not completely asleep, he explains that individuals are typically able to achieve complete relaxation throughout their treatment, and their vital signs are closely monitored to ensure an optimal level of safety and care. After the appointment, patients will generally feel a bit drowsy, so a close friend or family member will need to drive them home, Dr. Schlossberg adds. The effects of the medication should fully subside by the next day, at which time normal routines and activities can be resumed.
Much like the previous two options, notes Dr. Klotz, IV sedation can provide patients with an anxiety-free dental experience. Administered directly into the bloodstream, this quick-acting sedation method can help people rest – or sleep – comfortably throughout their treatment, depending on the desired level of sedation. Since patients are completely relaxed, Dr. Klotz says more dental work can generally be completed with an optimal level of efficiency. Once they awake, she adds that the patient will have little to no recollection of treatment. They will also need to be driven home and cared for by a close friend or family member, but normal activities can generally be resumed the following day.
Ultimately, Dr. Klotz and Dr. Schlossberg state that sedation dentistry has helped many, many patients at their practice receive the dental care and treatment they require in a relaxed and controlled environment. When considering a particular sedation method, however, they stress the importance of seeking a qualified dentist who has experience with several different techniques. By doing so, the Bethesda dentists say patients can help ensure they receive the safest, most effective option for their unique needs and medical history.
