What to Expect After Dental IV Sedation

For many patients, IV sedation can make dental treatment far more comfortable, and the recovery afterward is usually smooth and predictable. In the first couple of hours, you’ll likely wake up feeling groggy and relaxed as the medication wears off, so a trusted adult will need to drive you home and stay with you for a bit. It’s normal to feel sleepy, unsteady, or have only a vague memory of the procedure.
Once you’re home, most people nap on and off, sip water, and stick to light foods while avoiding anything that requires focus or coordination. Over the next several hours, the drowsiness gradually fades, but your reaction time may still be slower than usual. This is why driving, working, or doing anything strenuous should wait until the next day. By evening, you may feel mostly back to normal, and by the next morning, you should feel fully alert again.
Resting, staying hydrated, eating soft foods, and giving yourself a full day to recover can contribute to a more comfortable, stress-free experience.
