What Are Dental Implants?

With dental implants, Dr. Schlossberg and Dr. Klotz can help their patients from Bethesda and beyond to improve the appearance and functionality of a smile that is missing teeth. Dental implants are different from other restorative services because they best mimic nature’s own design. That’s what makes them more effective than other, more traditional options. Traditional restorative options replace your missing teeth, but implants integrate a man made root that anchors the new tooth more permanently.

Why is that important?

The roots of our teeth serve an important function. Besides anchoring our teeth they also stimulate the growth of new bone to keep the jaw healthy. When a tooth goes missing, part of the jaw begins to melt away. Over time, the jaw will weaken putting other teeth at risk. A dental implant from Bethesda Sedation Dentistry will help by replacing your missing tooth and your missing root.

The Dental Implant Process

Restoring one or more teeth with dental implants requires two stages of care. In the first stage, Dr. Klotz or Dr. Schlossberg will gently place your implant (or implants,) into the bone.  Since there are no nerve endings in bone, most patients are pleasantly surprised that Advil can take care of most post-operative discomfort.   As the area heals, a bonding process will begin.  The implant actually integrates with the bone.  The end result will be a strong foundation for your new smile.

Following that, you’ll be ready to have your new crown, partial, or denture attached. At Bethesda Sedation Dentistry, we can complete both phases in our office. Often, dentists have to refer their patients to an oral surgeon, but we have the training and experience to handle both phases of your care. When your implants are complete, you can care for them with normal brushing and flossing, plus regular visits with us every six months.
